A Shoreline Worth Preserving
If you’ve spent enough summers on Gull Lake, you know something most first-time visitors don’t.
The shoreline has stories.
Long before today’s South Beach Cabins overlooked the water, this stretch of Gull Lake welcomed families under different names. Island View Resort and Cronoble’s Resort were destinations in their own right, where generations gathered for fishing trips, summer vacations, and evenings spent around the campfire.
Children learned to swim here. Friendships were formed here. Family traditions began here. The names have changed over the decades. The memories never have.
More Than Old Cabins
Some of the buildings that stood on South Beach were approaching 100 years old.
Think about that for a moment.
Nearly a century of Minnesota winters. Nearly a century of summer vacations. Nearly a century of stories tucked inside weathered walls. Those cabins had earned every creak in the floorboards.
Every worn porch step. Every faded photograph taken in front of them. They had served families faithfully for generations. But time asks something of every building.
Wood weathers. Mechanical systems age. Foundations shift.
Eventually, there comes a point when preserving a place means making difficult decisions. Not because the past isn’t valued, but because the future deserves the same opportunity.
Preserving the Shoreline, Not Just the Structures
Replacing century-old buildings wasn’t about erasing history.
It was about protecting it. The goal was never to recreate a different resort. The goal was to ensure this remarkable stretch of Gull Lake would continue welcoming families for another hundred years.
That meant investing in buildings designed to stand the test of time while honoring everything that made this shoreline special in the first place.
Morning coffee with a lake view. Barefoot walks to the beach. Kids running between cabins. One more story around the fire before bed. Those experiences don’t belong to a building. They belong to this place.
The Next Hundred Years
Today’s South Beach Cabins represent the newest chapter in a story that began long before Cragun’s expanded onto this shoreline.
They’re larger. More comfortable. Designed for the way families vacation today. But their purpose hasn’t changed. Bring people together. Because someday, a child staying in one of these cabins will return with children of their own. They won’t remember when the cabins were built.
They’ll remember cannonballs off the dock. Late-night card games around the dining table. Grandpa making pancakes before anyone else woke up. Watching the sunrise over Gull Lake from the porch. Those are the memories that become traditions.
And traditions are what make places legendary.
Carrying the Story Forward
Every generation leaves its mark on Cragun’s.
The families of Island View did. The families of Cronoble’s did. The Cragun family did. Today’s guests will too. That’s what stewardship looks like. Not preserving every board or every nail. But preserving the reason people came here in the first place.
To slow down. To reconnect. To spend time together. To create memories that will someday become someone else’s tradition. And that’s exactly what this shoreline is ready to do for another hundred years.
