For a place with more than 85 years of history, that wasn’t a decision anyone took lightly. Because Cragun’s has never belonged to one person. It belongs to every family who returns each summer. Every golfer who plans the same trip with lifelong friends. Every couple who celebrates another anniversary overlooking Gull Lake. Every child who catches their first fish from the dock.
That understanding shaped everything that followed.
The question was never, “What can we build?”
The question was, “How do we protect something that already means so much to so many people?”
A Shared Vision
Every legendary place needs people willing to look beyond today.
For Cragun’s, one of those people was Jamie Tatge. Long before construction crews arrived, Jamie recognized what so many Minnesotans already knew.
Cragun’s wasn’t simply a successful resort. It was part of the fabric of the Brainerd Lakes Area. An iconic place where memories had been made for generations. A place worth preserving.
Drawing on years of relationships throughout the community and hospitality industry, Jamie played a pivotal role in bringing together a group of partners who shared that same belief.
The goal wasn’t to reinvent Cragun’s.
It was to become good stewards of its future. To invest in the property with the same care and respect that had defined it for decades. That philosophy became the foundation for every decision that followed. Not because the buildings needed to be different. But because the experiences inside them deserved to be even better.
More Than an Investment
It’s easy to measure a project like this by square footage, construction schedules, or the number of new spaces created.
But that’s not what made this transformation remarkable. What mattered most was the commitment behind it. Every conversation centered around a simple idea:
Honor the past. Build for the future.
That meant preserving the spirit guests have always loved while creating spaces that feel timeless instead of trendy. Spaces where families would naturally gather. Where friends would linger after dinner. Where mornings begin with coffee overlooking the lake. Where another generation would someday create memories of their own.
Building a Team
Once the vision was clear, it was time to bring together the people who could make it a reality.
The ownership group didn’t simply hire firms to complete a project. They assembled a team of people who understood the responsibility that came with shaping one of Minnesota’s most recognizable resorts. Each would bring a different perspective. An architect, who lives minutes away from the resort, to imagine what the next chapter could look like.
A local builder to transform those ideas into reality. A local designer to create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and unmistakably like Cragun’s.
And hundreds of skilled craftspeople whose work would eventually become the backdrop for countless future vacations. Because great places are never created by one person.
They’re built by communities.
The Story Was Just Beginning
As plans evolved and ideas took shape, something became clear.
This wasn’t simply about replacing buildings. It was about preparing Cragun’s for another generation of family traditions.
Soon, drawings would become foundations. Foundations would become gathering places. And guests who had watched the transformation from a distance would finally begin to see the future taking shape. But before walls could be raised…
Someone first had to imagine what they could become.
